What is Fiber? How Much Fiber Should My Child Get?

1 min read · Clinician-reviewed

Dietary fiber is a type of carbohydrate that the body cannot digest. It is found in plant-based foods like fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fiber plays a crucial role in maintaining a healthy digestive system, and it is particularly important for preventing and treating constipation.

There are two types of fiber: soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber dissolves in water to form a gel-like substance, which can help soften the stool. Insoluble fiber does not dissolve in water and adds bulk to the stool, which helps it move more quickly through the digestive system. Most plant-based foods contain a combination of both types of fiber.

How Much Fiber Does a Child Need?

A practical way to estimate fiber requirements in children is the formula 'age (years) + 5 g per day,' which is consistent with Institute of Medicine (IOM) values and can be easily used in clinical practice. While the 'age + 5' formula is widely used and simple, individual requirements may vary with energy intake, and adequate hydration should always be ensured.

Recommended fiber intake for children according to major international guidelines:

Age Group | Recommended Intake | Source/Comment

  • 1–3 years: ≈ 10–14 g/day
  • 4–8 years: ≈ 16–20 g/day
  • 9–13 years: ≈ 22–26 g/day (Boys ≈ 25 g; Girls ≈ 22 g)
  • 14–18 years: ≈ 26–31 g/day (Boys ≈ 31 g; Girls ≈ 26 g)

When increasing fiber in your child's diet, it is important to do so gradually and to also increase their fluid intake. A sudden increase in fiber without enough water can actually make constipation worse.
