Do Milk and Dairy Products Increase Constipation?
The relationship between milk and dairy products and constipation in children is complex and not the same for every child. For some children, excessive dairy intake can contribute to constipation, while for others, it may not be a factor at all.
Cow's Milk Protein Intolerance
In a subset of children, constipation can be a symptom of cow's milk protein intolerance. This is not the same as lactose intolerance. In cow's milk protein intolerance, the immune system reacts to the proteins in milk, which can lead to a variety of symptoms, including constipation. A landmark study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that for a significant number of children with chronic constipation that did not respond to laxatives, eliminating cow's milk from their diet led to a resolution of their symptoms.
If cow's milk protein intolerance is suspected, a healthcare provider may recommend a trial of a cow's milk-free diet for a period of 2 to 4 weeks to see if symptoms improve. It is important to do this under medical supervision to ensure the child is still receiving adequate nutrition.
Excessive Dairy Intake
For other children, the issue may not be an intolerance but rather the quantity of dairy products consumed. Milk and cheese are low in fiber and can be very filling. If a child drinks a lot of milk or eats a lot of cheese, they may not have much of an appetite for fiber-rich foods like fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. This can lead to a low-fiber diet, which is a common cause of constipation.
What Should Parents Do?
If you suspect that dairy products may be contributing to your child's constipation, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if a trial of a dairy-free diet is appropriate or if the focus should be on moderating intake and increasing fiber and fluids. It is generally not recommended to eliminate entire food groups from a child's diet without medical guidance.
